About Tony Smith
Originally from Greenock, just west of Glasgow, my dad was a really keen photographer, and over the years he tried to get
me to pick it up. I will admit, at first, I didn’t have any interest, but then, my daughter was born. Gennie arrived in 1997, and
from that moment on, I have learned everything I could about photography. I bought a small compact camera, started taking
pictures of her, and eventually I realised I loved it. I then started to take images of my next daughter, Poppy. My mum helped
me out with purchasing one or two of the cameras I have owned, thanks mum, and my dad helped withsome of the technical
stuff. I now have to teachhim a thing or two, which he loves. I haven’t looked back since.
I now use a Canon digital SLR camera. I have the Canon EOS 30D; I have lenses that cover from 10mm, right up to 300mm.
This is more than sufficient for just about any situation. In the past, I have made 30inch x 20inch prints from this camera,
so the quality is most definitely there. I process the images in their RAW format. This is like a digital negative, and ensures
absolute top quality every time. It also allows far more latitude when processing the image, which makes my job that much
easier too. I use the latest digital manipulation software, Adobe Photoshop, which I have used since at least 1999.
I have enjoyed shooting weddings, christenings, and the odd football match too. Most recently I have been the main
photographer for a local dance school, Kelcatz. I donate my time to shoot the dress rehearsal for them, so they have some
images to put on display when people come to the show.
My work has been published in the likes of Practical Photography magazine, and most recently in an exciting new book.
The Guide to Great Photography. There is a link to the book on the links page.
